If I Could Keep Only One Thing
One day, my children may look at my life and see many different things.
Cashew brokerage.
Books.
Websites.
Artificial Intelligence.
Market research.
Data collection.
There were times when I asked myself a simple question:
Out of everything I am doing, what truly matters?
What will still have value ten years from now?
What is the small thing that could create most of the long-term results?
After many years of observation, I arrived at an answer.
It is not AI.
It is not a website.
It is not a book.
It is not even a successful business deal.
The most valuable things are often the ones accumulated quietly every day and extremely difficult for others to copy.
When I was younger, I believed successful people were those who had the most answers.
Later, I realized something different.
The people who create lasting value are often the people who collect better observations.
They notice things others overlook.
They record them.
They accumulate them.
And over time, they connect those pieces into a larger picture.
In the cashew business, information appears every day.
Buyers ask for prices.
Sellers make offers.
Ships arrive at ports.
Factories increase purchases.
Customers delay payments.
Markets rise.
Markets fall.
Most of this information disappears within days.
But if someone records these observations consistently for years, something remarkable begins to happen.
Patterns emerge.
They begin to know:
Who is a genuine buyer.
Who is only making inquiries.
Who keeps their word.
Who frequently changes their mind.
Which factories can be trusted.
Which customers consistently pay on time.
When the market is becoming optimistic.
When the market is becoming fearful.
These insights cannot simply be purchased.
They can only be accumulated through time.
A website is a storage system.
A book is a packaging system.
AI is a tool.
Brokerage is a way of testing reality.
But original data is the asset.
Because original data is the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Without it, many decisions are little more than educated guesses.
With it, uncertainty becomes easier to navigate.
If one day my children choose to build careers of their own, I hope they remember one thing.
Do not spend your life only trying to make money.
Spend part of your life building something that is difficult to replicate.
It may be knowledge.
It may be experience.
It may be credibility.
It may be a database.
It may be relationships built through years of honesty, trust, and keeping your word.
These assets tend to compound over time.
If someone asked me today:
Out of everything you are doing, what could create most of the value over the next decade?
My answer would be simple.
Not the next deal.
Not the next book.
Not the next technology.
But the living database built from real life, one day at a time.
A database of people.
Of markets.
Of trust.
Of decisions.
Of thousands of conversations and hundreds of transactions.
Technology will change.
Markets will change.
Tools will change.
But genuine observations accumulated over many years often become an advantage that is remarkably difficult to replace.
That is why I continue to write.
Why I continue to take notes.
Why I continue to meet real people.
Why I continue to listen carefully to the market every day.
Not because I want to know more than others.
But because I want to see a little more clearly each year.
And sometimes, seeing a little more clearly each year for ten years can take a person somewhere entirely different.
Perhaps the most valuable asset a person owns is not what they possess today.
But what they have patiently observed, recorded, understood, and accumulated over many years.
And perhaps the most important question is not:
“What are you doing today?”
But rather:
“What are you quietly accumulating every day that will become valuable ten years from now?”
